I honestly did not notice Rarity was black until everyone in the comments pointed it out. I was looking at the accuracy of all their "manes" and the whole show only half the face idea. I saw you on DD for your Ice King picture (I'm a huge Ice King fan) and was just searching through your art folders and I found this gem. I really do like it, though one thing I noticed is their faces are a little sharp, which sometimes gives off a manish look. Other than that I love it!
Thanks! Normally I don't respond to rude comments because I don't like to risk making myself sound like a jerk, but some of the things I've heard people say - both on my work and on others - just astound me. I'm like, really, people? REALLY?!
No it's true. I find it unbelievable how people can just say thing like 'why is character x black' like it's not a problem! Also being black it does offend me when people say these thing, and i've seen it be a problem when characters get humanised or even with cosplay. If a fan wants to draw other races for characters then let them.
sorry for the rant. I've just been recently looking at MLP humanised and whenever the characters are either chubby or another race, someone has something negative to say about it. But thanks for the reply and happy days
What's with all the RACIST people below? Seriously. Wtf is wrong with you guys. Love and tolerance my ass. IF this is how the brony community is then I want to kick them all in the rear. Not everyone in the world is ONE shade .-.
Just never really liked...that...Im NOT racist. Its just, Studio B specifically made them "not black". So...inaccurate art annoys me... Don't take it as a big deal....just little things I notice. Not that big of a problem.
Now, what do you mean by "not black"? Their voice actresses aren't black? I've watched plenty of cartoons where white voice actors play black characters, and vice versa. Or do you mean that their coat isn't black, and therefore, their humanized characters can't be black? Obviously, the colors of their coats shouldn't indicate what their skin color should be. If that were the case, then a humanized Twilight Sparkle shouldn't be white, either; she should be purple. And RD should be blue, etc. etc.
There is no canon for humanized ponies, so your claim of this being "inaccurate art" is really bogus. I seriously doubt that Studio B had intended these characters to be in a homogeneous, white separatist society, if they were even thinking about race at all (since, after all, these are PONIES and therefore don't even have races).
I'm not trying to sound rude; I don't like it. I'm just trying to form some kind of an understanding behind the logic of responses like yours, because it's getting old. I, and a lot of other artists doing MLP fanart, have been getting a lot of crap about *gasp* putting diversity in their characters. Watching the cartoons, I've just always pictured a human Rarity being black. I'm not sorry for that. I've seen people draw an Asian Rarity, white Rarity, even a Rarity wearing a hijab. And you know what? It's all good. If you like seeing all-white ponies, well, awesome. Show me a guidebook on how to draw "accurate" humanized ponies, and maybe then I'll change my ways. I'm astounded that I even have to defend myself, really.
also.... If you're going to take a WHITE pony and a WHITE voice actor with a WHITE accent...why the hell are you going to make her black?...It's inaccurate and it annoys me...along with twilight sparkle. She is CLEARLY white, with her accent and voice AND voice actor! She would OBVIOUSLY be a white human! The only pony that has a SLIGHT exception is luna. Yet, she has a WHITE voice! So technically...she's white! So unless they have a black voice actor that comes in a does a black voice. That's okay...aka Zecora. She is NOT a black pony...but her voice actor, and her atmosphere, and how she talks is a different race! EVEN HER BODY STRUCTURE IS DIFFERENT. That's what Im talking about. The color of the pony does NOT matter, its how they act and talk.
Im sorry, but wow. I, along with alot of black girls in my school got called names for not "sounding or acting black." They'd say that we needed to "stop acting White" or "acting like an Oreo" or "stop trying to act all Proper" or "Wow, I didn't expect you to get such high grades" and this was JUST because I speak in a similar manner to what These characters do. Clear, and enunciating all of the letters in the word... and try my best to be the best person i can be academically And I'm in college currently to gain a PHD in medicine.
Its extremely horrible for you to say that the AMOUNT of Melanin in your skin cells dictates how you are going to talk or act. I'm Not angry at you, because i know that that is probably All you have seen in your area and you don't know any better. But it DOES hurt ALOT. So please. please consider the fact that there is more outside of your immediate town, or state. Maybe this is why I relate to Twilight Sparkle. Because she has to try SO hard to prove herself worthy to the Princesses and her friends and her status in the town and the thought of Failure is crippling.
So please, Try your best to not let the outward appearance of someone allow you to determine who that person is.
Why on Earth would Rarity--let alone anypony--be forced into one human race? They're ponies. They're not bound by our human skin colors; Rarity's purple, ferchrissakes! You need to grow up and accept that different people can have different conceptions of how something would look if it were actually depicted as such. Also, Twilight's not any discernible ethnicity, from what I can see, so what of it?
No, the humanized ARE NOT cannon. Yet, would you honestly think that the characters where meant to be black, white, or any race? I pictured them...pony. But really, the voice actors are white...so I would believe that if they where humanized..they would be white as well. NO...don't get into the coat colors -.-. That has nothing to do with this, if anything, you would relate to the character and how they act, not how they look. (yeahthisisgonnasoundREALLYracistbut...) Black people kinda TALK like black people. Asian people have "asian" eyes and what not. So...if studio B where going to have them "human" or RELATE to humans. I think they would be "white". If rarity where to be black, Im sure she would have a blackish voice y'know?... But I don't want to get all into this. Im just saying how they should be related. You do whatever you want...I was being stupid (yetagain)but...me as well, must defend myself. In reality, they are pony. But in relation, they are white because... that's how they where created. So yeah...thats enough... enoughenoughenough...Im done...ignore my stupid-immatureness...so yeah...You keep making you're black rarity...I don't give a shit
good job! not to sound rude or something but maybe you should practise on giving each one not the same facial features. i can see you tried it, and the upper three are quite good in variety but twilight sparkle and fluttershy...those two have so much potential for having very unique faces and you gave them almost the same eyes, lips, nose, chin/cheeks. sorry if i sound weird, english isnt my first language~ ^-^ but i think you know what i mean
Oh, I totally know what you're talking about, and you're certainly not being rude! Honestly, giving the people I draw individualized faces hasn't been something I've given too much thought on until fairly recently, and it's something I'm trying to get better at. It seems to be easier to do with males than it is with females, at least for me.
